Register of reimbursements for the maintenance of insane persons, 1892-1904.

St 1892, c 243 allowed, upon approval of the Massachusetts governor and council, partial or full reimbursement by the state of expenses incurred by towns for the maintenance of mentally ill persons in state institutions. Any town with a valuation of less than $500,000 could receive reimbursement from the state treasury. St 1905, c 282 gave authority for the reimbursements, as of Jan. 1, 1904, to the State Board of Insanity. St 1908, c 629 made the Commonwealth responsible for expenses of such persons in state institutions. Series is a quarterly report, through 1903, of authorized payments listing town name, valuation, name of individual institutionalized, institution name, date request was received and approved by the Council, amount allowed, tax rate, and portion of expense reimbursed.

St 1890, c 428 enabled municipal officials or directors of railroad companies in Massachusetts to petition the Superior Court to abolish or alter railroad grade crossings; a court-appointed commission then made a decision to be confirmed by the court.
